The University of Delhi is set to consider an ambitious hostel construction and redevelopment proposal valued at approximately ₹8,000 crore. The plan, scheduled for discussion by the university Executive Council on October 13, aims to create accommodation for more than 30,000 students across multiple locations.
New hostels across campuses
The proposal includes new residential facilities at the Dhaka Complex, Najafgarh and Surajmal Vihar campuses. Reported project estimates allocate about ₹5,157 crore to new hostel construction and close to ₹3,000 crore to rebuilding existing accommodation. The redevelopment component includes longstanding facilities such as Jubilee Hall.
Why student housing matters
For students arriving in Delhi from other states, finding safe and affordable accommodation can be a major challenge. Limited university housing pushes many towards rented rooms and paying guest facilities, often with significant financial pressure on families. Expanding institutional accommodation could help students focus on their studies and improve access to campus life.

Approval and funding still required
The proposals are being placed before the Executive Council and should not be treated as sanctioned construction projects. Further approvals, funding decisions and execution planning would be necessary before work begins. The scale of the project also makes construction timelines, maintenance and student affordability important considerations.
A broader opportunity
If implemented, the expansion could change the residential experience of thousands of students. Beyond adding beds, the university has an opportunity to build accommodation that prioritises safety, accessibility, common study spaces and a supportive learning environment.
