Tamil Nadu: A major opportunity has opened for engineering and science graduates aiming for postgraduate studies, research opportunities and technical careers. IIT Madras has officially begun the registration process for GATE 2027, bringing several important changes to one of India’s most sought-after entrance examinations.
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 registration process began on September 2, 2026, through the official GATE portal. Candidates can submit applications without a late fee until September 27, while those requiring additional time can apply with a late fee until October 5.
New Robotics and Automation paper added
One of the biggest highlights of GATE 2027 is the introduction of a new Robotics and Automation (RA) test paper.
The addition reflects the growing importance of robotics, automation and intelligent technologies across engineering and industry. With this new paper, GATE 2027 will be conducted across 30 test papers, giving students from emerging technical disciplines another pathway to participate in the national-level examination.

Candidates can appear for one paper or up to two papers, subject to the permitted two-paper combinations announced by the examination authorities.
DigiLocker made mandatory for Indian candidates
GATE 2027 also introduces an important change in the registration process. Indian nationals are required to use DigiLocker for registration, with relevant personal information being fetched through the platform to simplify identity and document verification.
Candidates have therefore been advised to create or update their verified DigiLocker accounts before completing the application process.
When will GATE 2027 be conducted?
The examination will be conducted over three weekends in February 2027.
The scheduled dates are:
– February 6 and 7, 2027
– February 13 and 14, 2027
– February 20 and 21, 2027
The official schedule also lists January 4, 2027 for city-allotment notification, while the admit-card download date is yet to be announced.
The GATE 2027 results are scheduled to be announced on March 19, 2027.
More than just an entrance examination
For thousands of students, GATE is more than another competitive examination. A strong GATE score can open doors to postgraduate programmes at leading institutions, research opportunities and recruitment pathways in several public-sector organisations.
This makes the 2027 examination particularly significant for engineering and science students planning their next academic or professional step.
The addition of Robotics and Automation also signals how rapidly the country’s technical education landscape is evolving. As artificial intelligence, robotics and automation become increasingly integrated into industries, the examination is expanding to accommodate emerging areas of expertise.
A crucial period for aspirants
With registrations now underway, aspirants have a limited period to complete their applications and begin focused preparation.
Candidates should carefully check the eligibility requirements, paper combinations, revised syllabi and documentation requirements before submitting their forms. IIT Madras has also advised candidates to refer to the updated syllabus for their chosen paper, as changes have been introduced in several areas.
For students dreaming of entering India’s premier postgraduate institutions or building careers in advanced engineering and technology, GATE 2027 could be an important stepping stone.
With a new Robotics and Automation paper, a technology-driven registration process and a clearly announced examination calendar, this year’s GATE is set to reflect the changing face of engineering education in India.
