New Delhi: The NEET PG 2026 counselling process is moving forward with the release of the postgraduate medical seat matrix and the opening of the assessment process for eligible Persons with Disabilities candidates.
Around 58,000 seats
The total number of MD, MS and postgraduate diploma seats has increased to around 58,000, up from 52,173 in the previous year. That represents an increase of 5,827 seats and expands the range of options available to postgraduate medical aspirants.
Growth across institutions
Reported data indicate a substantial increase in seats in private and deemed institutions, alongside growth in government medical colleges. Several clinical and diagnostic branches have also recorded additional capacity.

PwD assessment timeline
The primary medical assessment process for eligible PwD candidates opens from October 1 and is scheduled to continue through October 9. Candidates seeking reservation under the PwD category should closely follow MCC and DGHS instructions regarding designated assessment centres and documentation.
Planning for counselling
Aspirants should study the official seat matrix by institution, speciality and category rather than looking only at the national seat total. Rank, speciality preference, location and historical closing ranks all matter when building a choice list.
EduSutra Perspective
The addition of 5,827 postgraduate seats is significant for India’s medical education capacity. For individual aspirants, however, the practical opportunity will depend on where those seats have been added and how they align with speciality preferences, category and rank.
