Chennai: BITS Pilani and IIT Madras have entered into a five-year academic and research collaboration aimed at expanding opportunities for students, faculty members and researchers across the two institutions.
What the partnership covers
The agreement provides a framework for joint research in areas of mutual interest, exchange of students and faculty, sharing of academic and scholarly material, and joint seminars, workshops and academic meetings.
Student exchange with credit recognition
Students participating in the exchange programme can undertake coursework, research activities and project work at the partner institution as special exchange students. Courses may be taken for credit or audit subject to academic approval and prerequisites.

Tuition-fee waiver at host institution
A notable feature of the programme is a tuition-fee waiver at the host institution for exchange students. Credits and grades earned during the exchange can be recognised by the student’s home institution based on the academic report issued by the host.
Research collaboration
The partnership also creates a formal channel for faculty and researchers to combine expertise and institutional resources, potentially supporting interdisciplinary work in emerging areas of science, engineering and technology.
EduSutra Perspective
Partnerships between leading institutions can create academic value beyond rankings and branding when students can actually move between campuses, earn recognised credits and participate in joint research. The exchange and fee-waiver provisions make this agreement particularly relevant from a student-opportunity perspective.
